Woke up this morning to a wonderfully blue sky and very cool temperatures. Decided that it was just to nice out to not spend another day here in Vermont doing some of the exploring that I had missed out on yesterday when it was raining.
Headed over to Burlington again and then on south of there to the town of Shelburne. My ultimate destination was the Shelburne Museum there in the town. Put together by essentially one family, the Webb's, the museum is a mish-mash of buildings and collections that the family was interested in. So in one building you had circus items including a whole bunch of old wooden carousel animals and a 1":1' scale model of a circus parade that had hundreds of people, animals and wagons and that stretched for more than 200 feet.
Another building, the 'Horseshoe Barn', built in the shape of a "U", housed part of the collection of horse drawn carriages, surreys, sleighs and other coaches. Some of those are just stunning to look at. Next door at the 'Barn Annex' they continue the collection with all of the work type wagons, stage coaches, ox carts and even a full size Conestoga Wagon.
Ton's of other stuff to look at also, from the sidewheeler steamship 'Ticondaroga', to covered wooden bridges, to toy and doll collections, to a whole exhibit on Robots, Rockets, Steampunk, Novelty and Time. That exhibit showcased vintage collectibles from science fiction movies, TV shows and books including 'War of the Worlds', 'Lost in Space' , 'Star Wars' and all the one's in between.
All in all I spent about 5 hours wandering around the various exhibits looking at as much as I could. Still missed a whole bunch completely, and skipped over a lot of other parts, but I just love this kind of place.
Eventually though even I get tired and hungry at some point so I climbed back in the truck and made it back to the trailer by 6:30 this evening. Read some magazines, listened to some news, watched a couple episodes of The Big Bang Theory ( TBBT), and relaxed after doing the dishes and cleaning up a bit. Need to be up and on the road early tomorrow. It's only a little more than 200 miles over to Bangor, but Emma is telling me that it will take at least 6 hours to do it, so it must be a pretty narrow, twisty road. Looking forward to some new country again and I feel like I need to go eat lobster a whole bunch of times. It will be interesting to see if I can eat enough of it to grow tired of the taste.
